It was freshened not too long ago, and it's nice to see a cool Monte without all the SS gear strapped to it. That means a clean, chiseled body, a spoiler-free trunk lid, and only bright stainless cladding on the rocker panels. Brilliant bright red stripes highlight the car's dramatic fender lines, which typically vanish on a black car. But here, they give the car a great sporty attitude that accentuates the awesome stance. Even the padded half roof is in excellent condition, and looks entirely appropriate on the original sport/luxury coupe. Burgundy cloth was big at GM in the '80s, and it always looks best in a black car. The Monte Carlo was known for its comfort, and the wide bench seat doesn't disappoint, with a soft, plush seating surface that is great for long-distance cruising. The seats themselves are in great shape, both front and back, with only minor wear visible on the driver's side. Those famous extra-long doors make back seat entry easier, and the door panels' only demerit might be some wear from where the driver's elbow might rest. The burled walnut dash appliques leave no doubt about this Monte's mission, but the matching Grant GT wood-rimmed steering wheel is a nice addition. This one also offers A/C, an updated AM/FM/CD stereo system, and plush carpets that keep it luxury car quiet inside. And if you have any concerns about how clean this car really is, one look in the spotless trunk will instantly wipe away any doubts. The engine is a recent 350 cubic inch V8 (receipts included), which slipped right into the tired old 305's place without modifications. Even the original accessory drive is intact, and it all looks very OEM. The only visible upgrade is the cast aluminum Edelbrock air cleaner atop the 4-barrel carburetor, but from the driver's seat, this slick Monte is more than a match for even the factory SS version. A built TH400 transmission will probably outlast us all, and long-tube headers dumping into a Flowmaster dual exhaust system give this luxury cruiser a muscle car's voice. The suspension was tweaked to give it a slight rake, and handling is helped out in a big way with those lovely polished 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels wearing 245/45/17 Kumho radials. This is one clean, well-executed Monte Carlo that remains an excellent all-around performer and still draws envious glances on the street.
