Its “Safety Girder” X-type frame was the foundation for a longer, lower and wider body that reduced overall height without sacrificing passenger headroom. Other notable features included anti-dive braking, a full coil-spring suspension, a foot-operated parking brake and two optional 348-cubic inch V8 engines. Available in two-door Sport Coupe and Sport Convertible form, the Impala was the top model in Chevrolet’s upscale Bel Air Series. Standard equipment included all the features of the lesser models plus Impala-only scripts, insignia and emblems, ribbed body sill panels, imitation chrome scoops ahead of the rear wheels, a two-spoke deep-dish steering wheel, a rear radio speaker grille and triple rear taillights. It is well equipped and retains its original AM radio, while power is provided by an optional 280 hp, 348-cubic inch “Super Turbo-Thrust” engine with three two-barrel carburetors, mated to a Turboglide automatic transmission.
