Its a Chevelle. Its black. Its got a big block. Need we say more? If youre looking for a brutally fast piece of muscle thats both affordable and nicely finished, this 72 SS might be your best choice. Not perfect, but a great car with incredible potential, all for a bargain price. The horsepower wars were all but over in 1972, but the Chevelle still looked the part of a street brawler. Thanks to the vast interchangeability of the parts, all the big horsepower pieces bolt right in and you can give it a genuine SS paint job to complete the illusion. This one started out as a clean southern car anyway, so making it straight was easy. In fact, it was so straight that black paint became the obvious choice and it looks downright brutal with the white SS stripes. Its two-stage urethane, so a quick color sand and buff will make it look incredible, but even as-is, this car has presence. A lot of A-body enthusiasts like the later single-headlight look for its cleaner lines, and combined with the blacked-out SS grille, reproduction SS badging, and flashy chrome bumpers, this is one heck of a good-looking car. The interior remains fairly stock, and with black bench seats it has a purposeful look that serves the Chevelle quite well. The seat covers are new as is the dash pad, so it looks and feels fresh when you slide behind the wheel. The door panels and perhaps even the carpets are original, so if youre a stickler for perfection, maybe youll want to replace them, but theyre certainly serviceable as-is. Note that this is a factory A-C car, and the system has been converted to R134a refrigerant so its easy to service in the future. Auxiliary gauges hang under the dash in the usual location, and a newer Pioneer AM-FM-CD stereo makes it easy to spend time behind the wheel. The trunk is remarkably clean, showing clean spatter-finish paint, as youd expect from a car thats lived down south most of its life. You could still get a big block from the factory in 1972, but nothing that ran like this one. A built 454 cubic inch V8 was stuffed between the fenders, painted Chevy Orange, and topped with an Offenhauser intake to help build horsepower. Aside from the open-element air cleaner and a few chrome bits, it looks like the factory might have built it. Lots of new equipment, including the alternator and brake booster and master cylinder mean that its ready to cruise today, and the ultra-clean engine bay is a pleasure to show off at the local cruise night. A snarky dual exhaust system gives the big block a baritone rumble and with a TH400 3-speed automatic and a 12-bolt rear end, you dont have to worry about breakage if you get on the loud pedal now and then. The chassis is fairly original and quite solid with no rust issues to speak of, and it sits right with a bit of rake for a hot-rod attitude. Classic 15-inch Torque Thrusts wear staggered 215-70-15 front and 255-60-15 rear BFGoodrich T-A radials.
