The second-generation Camaro got its first major facelift in 1974, mostly due to federal bumper requirements. However, theres no arguing that this 1974 Z-28 doesnt still show clear Camaro DNA in its look, from the brilliant red paint to the totally disco interior. If fact, if youre thing is a highly original, bar-find type of car thats been meticulously maintained since new, this might just be your next classic. If youre a fan of the Camaro in the 70s, this car should make you sweat. When we say original on this one, we mean it. The car was kept in climate controlled storage for most of its life, only brought back into circulation just a few years ago. On this amazing 74, the paint, interior and drivetrain are original and essentially untouched. In fact, the only changes youll really find on the whole car is that the exhaust and radiator have been replaced, along with a tune-up and some fresh lines to keep the fluids moving and keep the car as healthy as possible, all these years later. The ultra-straight bodywork is highlighted by the original red paint thats exactly the right shade. The factory-correct stripes, complete with Z-28 graphic on the hood and rear spoiler, have been well-maintained since new, completing the aggressive and very racy look that match its reputation. The revised bumpers are chrome, not body-colored as they would be in later year, so this 1974 model stands out from its siblings on both sides. Although we cant prove the mileage to be authentic, anyone whos ever driven an all-original, low mileage car will instantly recognize all the tell-tale signs that give you all the information you need: rebuilt or restored cars simply just dont drive as well as the factory built them when they were new. This car does not disappoint. The red interior is amazingly well-preserved, and at first glance most people would assume its all been replaced. However, on this car were proud to report what youre looking at is the authentic and factory-issued materials. High-back buckets still look great and show virtually no wear, the door panels are crisp and sharp, and even the red carpets are impressively well preserved. Theres a bit of contrast with a black center console and instrument panel, but the dash pad, which has also been carefully protected from the sun really complete the time-machine feel you get once youre inside. The gauges show bright markings, crisp lettering, and clear lenses, all additional proof of how carefully this car has been cared for. Interestingly enough, this Camaro carries factory A-C but no radio-its a factory radio-delete car that has never been upgraded with a stereo system. Thats kind of cool and makes you wonder about the guy who ordered it that way, because this certainly wasnt a car that was sitting on a dealers lot. Z-28s were still powered by Chevys top performer, and in this one you get the original #s matching 4-barrel 350 that made 245 horsepower and 280 pounds of torque. In 1974, those were pretty serious numbers, and it wasnt until almost 15 years later that Chevy would top those figures. The maintenance shows quite well under the hood, with clean Chevy Orange paint, a chrome dual-snorkel air cleaner, and lots of correct details like tower hose clamps, reproduction hoses, and refreshened accessories. The biggest engine also got GMs most durable transmission, a TH400 3-speed automatic feeding a 3.42 gear set in the 10-bolt rear end. The floors are shockingly clean, showing no rust or signs of replacement and the frame has been detailed to match the engine bay. A new reproduction dual exhaust system gives it a definite muscle car soundtrack, and even after nearly 40 years, handling is crisp and confident. Beautiful cast aluminum wheels were standard on the Z-28, and this one even wears reproduction F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval tires. This is one of those cars you just never see restored, or maintained to this level. But if that appeals to you (and why wouldnt it?)
